The Danish SPF System has become an international standard and is fundamental to Denmark’s pig industry. For the past four decades, the system has been essential to the high-quality level reached in pig genetics, logistics and health.
Established in 1971, the Danish SPF-system has since then proven itself as one of the world’s most unique production and health systems. As opposed to health declaration systems in other countries, it’s been possible to unite health interests and commercial interests. This has been done on the basis of a set of stringent rules concerning biosecurity, health control and the transport of pigs between herds.
“SPF” stands for Specific Pathogen Free – pigs that are free of a range of common disease-causing microorganisms.
The SPF-system is built on the principle that a single health status is declared for connected herds. The health status of pigs is tracked during all trading and transport and logged digitally. In Denmark, The Health Status Management under SEGES keeps track of the all Danish pig herds. Today, approximately 3,100 herds in Denmark have a SPF-health declaration.
